Sheriff’s Corner by Sheriff Kirby Brumby

The Goliad County Law Enforcement Center has a fenced, secure area behind and beside the building. This area is to provide space to store abandoned, seized and impounded vehicles. This area is the Sheriff’s Office Impound Yard. Within the impound yard are six large pecan trees. Before the Scarborough building was sold, reducing the size of the impound yard, we had more space to park vehicles and could avoid the area covered by the trees. But we are now forced to park vehicles near the trees. Owners of impounded vehicles are charged a daily fee and expect to get their vehicle back in the same condition as when it came into the yard. We have had a windshield knocked out by a pecan limb and the roof of another vehicle dented. The trees are close enough to the building to have limbs come thru the jail roof or to fall across the tall fencing. As much as I would like to keep the trees as they are, since the major concern is the safety and security of the facility, I decided, after discussing the problem with the county judge, to cut back the trees. I knew this decision might not be a popular decision, but it is a necessary one.

Successful law enforcement and safe neighborhoods are helped by community involvement. Goliad has had a number of burglaries over the last month and a half – the video store, La Bahia Gift Shop, the Little League concession, and the high school baseball concession. We have also had a number of mailboxes vandalized and stolen. Deputies and the investigator are working on these cases, but we could use your help. Our job is easier and a solution comes faster with the watchful citizen who has seen something suspicious and reports that information to the Sheriff’s Office. If you know something about one of these crimes, call Investigator Jimmy Garner at 361-645-3451.

Telephone scams are on the rise again. We have received several reports from people who think that the caller was trying to scam them. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t send money.

It’s that time of the year. For those of you who don’t have school age children, school started in Goliad County on Monday. School zone speeds and cell phone bans will be enforced. In the school zones, remember to slow down, be extra watchful for children, and don’t make cell phone calls. I will miss the opening four days of school due to a jail conference, but I look forward to seeing the elementary and intermediate children (and their parents) in front of those schools mornings and afternoons.
